What to Expect:

Seeking counseling can be a difficult choice to make. Please recognize that it takes strength and self-awareness to seek help and give yourself credit for that. Often things that aren't easy, are very much worth doing, so please don't allow fear to stop you from getting the help you need.  It is important that you feel comfortable with your counselor, so I am providing some details about how and where I practice.

entranceWait time: Clients are generally brought back within 5 minutes or so of their appointment time, though wait times vary from none - 15 minutes.  Though every effort is made to stay exactly on schedule, sometimes a client currently in with me is in a crisis or brings up an especially difficult issue that necessitates a few extra minutes.  Be assured, this same courtesy will be extended to you, when/if you are in need as well.

Office atmosphere: Upon entering my office, you will find a safe, warm environment where your privacy and confidentiality is respected and protected. office If you have never been in counseling before or did not have a good previous experience, I will discuss with you what to expect and make every effort to set you at ease as quickly as possible.  Relationships and trust take time to grow, and this is true of the counseling relationship as well.  Having taken advantage of counseling in my own life, I recognize how difficult it can be to be expected to air all your "dirty laundry" to a stranger.  Part of the therapeutic process is developing a trusting relationship between client and therapist.  The time it takes to develop this type of relationship varies greatly, depending on each individual.

Privacy and Confidentiality: Being in private practice as a sole practitioner, allows for much greater levels of privacy and confidentiality.  No one has access to any of my files or records except me, with the exception of my billing person. exit Even she has no access to anything without your written consent, and even then, she is only privy to what is absolutely necessary for billing purposes.  Since I am the only counselor, I can't think of any reason why anyone other than you (unless it is a joint session), would ever be in the waiting room with you.  My office space has been designed to assure as much privacy as possible.  For example, after your session, you will leave through a separate exit, which means you will not have to walk through the waiting room where the next client is waiting to be seen.

Counseling style: I tailor my counseling techniques to fit each individual client, depending on their particular issue as well as their personality and communication style.  My goal is to meet each client where they are and help them gain the life tools they need to move forward.  Each client is treated with respect and empathy. Some therapeutic models I often utilize are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Gestalt Therapy, Reality Therapy, Humanistic Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy.  For more information on these models, please just ask.  I am happy to provide additional information.

I currently provide services dealing with the following issues:

* As this is not an exhaustive list, please contact me if your issue is not listed, so that I may assess whether I can serve you or if you would be better served by someone else.  If you have an issue that is out of my realm of expertise, I will help you get a referral to an appropriate source. Despite my varied experience, I do not claim to be an expert in everything and would caution against anyone who does.

I also have experience with other clinical diagnoses and populations that I don't currently serve but which helps round out my overall understanding of people and of the field of mental health.  Some of these areas of experience include: adults with Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, and Bi-polar Disorder, as well as children diagnosed with ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Bi-polar Disorder, and Asperger's Disorder.
